Leave A Legacy
”That a generation to come might know thee, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:”
Psalms 78:6 & 7
Our theme this year in the Ladies department is “Leaving a Legacy”. We, as ladies, need to know God’s ways, live by them, and teach them to our children. This is not just about us and the here and now. It’s also about the generations to come. They are watching us now and waiting for us to lead them. It’s time for us to get beyond ourselves and look at the bigger picture. It does not matter our age, or whether or not we are married or have children of our own. It is the responsibility of every one of us in this group of ladies, because there is always someone looking at our actions and listening to our words. Our children need us to light the path for them and show them how to live a blessed and victorious life in God. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
As women of God we know that our responsibilities are toward our children and those that we mentor. We get our command from the Lord in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 (NLT) when it says, “Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD alone. And you must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are away on a journey, when you are lying down and when you are getting up again. Tie them to your hands as a reminder, and wear them on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. “ This is reiterated in the New Testament in Titus 2:3-5 when it says, “The aged women…teach the younger women…that the word of God be not blasphemed.” In order to have children who are dedicated to God in prayer, fasting and Bible reading, we must show prayer, fasting and Bible reading. To have children who are committed and faithful to the work of God and the house of God we must show through every circumstance of life commitment and faithfulness to the work of God and the house of God. To have children who love others we must first show love to others. As David said in Psalms 127:3-5, “children are…as arrows in the hand of a mighty man” and we must direct them in the path that they need to go.
We must pass on the values and beliefs that will help our children and those we mentor to become the adults that they need to be. Remember “the values we live by are worthy more when we pass them on.” This year, let’s begin to Leave our Legacy!
